Isn't washing your car at home illegal and/or environmentally irresponsible?

This is a very, very common question and a growing concern almost everywhere you can think of, and it’s valid. Some of us face more challenges than others, for example apartment blocks with off street parking, and no car wash facilities, though there may be ways around this. A few points to consider:

• We always suggest checking with your local council: If you live in a house, with a street front, there can be restrictions on washing cars against the kerb and even on your own driveway. If you’re fortunate to have grass, no problem. That’s your spot.
• Be water wise: if you’re concerned about water use, you could try using a pressure washer. They use less water than a hose. And again, if you have grass, you’re washing the car and watering the lawn at the same time.
• Washing is just one aspect of car care: even if you can’t wash your car at home, there are many more aspects of caring for your car that you can do at home. Interior cleaning, polishing, waxing, tyre dressing; basically, anything that doesn’t need a hose, you can do at home. No problem.
• Environmental concerns: this is a legitimate question. Consider though, that once car cleaning detergents and other chemicals are in their diluted, in use form, any environmental impact is minimised, even nullified. Hosing down, rinsing, etc dilutes the formula even further, so you can rest easy about your environmental impact.
