So then, why polish or wax a car, and what's the difference?

Your car’s paint, like your skin, has natural layers of protection, but it still needs help to stay in top shape. Your car’s clear coat works similarly, protecting the paint beneath, but it’s not invincible and over time, even simple washing, diminishes clear coats.

The difference between polishing and protecting/waxing your car’s paint is straightforward:
Polishing is like giving your car’s paint a facial. It removes tiny scratches, swirl marks, and dullness to make the surface smooth and shiny again. Think of it as fixing imperfections and bringing back the sparkle.
Protecting/waxing is like putting sunscreen and a raincoat on your car. It adds a protective layer (in the car care business, we refer to it as “sacrificial”) on top of clear coats to further help repel and shield it from sun damage, water, dirt, and other stuff that can harm it. They also add to the depth of gloss and shine.

In short: polishing fixes, waxing protects.
