Having the right tools and equipment makes any job easier and more satisfying. As well as specialised formulas from a reputable, trusted brand (like Autoglym), here’s some of the other things you’ll need:
- The right mitt: sponges used to be the thing, but wash mitts are the modern way. They’re softer and better at trapping dirt away from the surface, so less chance of swirls and micro scratches. They also mould to your hand, which means greater control, and no more dropping in the dirt.
- The right cloths: Microfibre cloths are your best friend for car cleaning. There are different piles, or nap, for different purposes (polish and wax finishing, dust lifting, for example), though at least have a good number of general-purpose cloths at the ready. View the Autoglym range here.
- A specialist microfibre drying towel or cloth: They soak up water fast without leaving streaks or scratches, giving you that spot-free finish, fast. Chamois’ still have place in car care, though we prefer drying towels for their superior soakability.
- Buckets: Ideally, you’ll need two large buckets, at least 10 litres; one for soapy water and one for rinsing your mitt. This “two-bucket method” is a pro-tip, and keeps dirt from getting back on your car, reducing the risk of scratches. If you’re real serious, add a third for wheel cleaning rinses.
- Applicators, designed for the job: for polish, gels and cream products, a great applicator such as the Perfect Polish Applicator, designed for the job, moulded to spread products wide and evenly, as well as precisely in hard-to-reach places, is essential.
These tools make sure your car gets the TLC it deserves, keeping it clean and looking its best without damaging the surfaces.
